Kardashian-Jenner baby names and their meanings

  • The Kardashian-Jenner family has grown substantially over the last few years
  • With each new baby born into the reality TV family comes buzz about the names
  • The most unique of the family's baby names are North, Reign, Dream and Stormi

The Kardashian-Jenner clan is known for being over-the-top in every sense of the word, especially when it comes to naming their children.

In the last eight years, four of Kris Jenner’s six famous offspring have welcomed kids of their own, subsequently adding another heir to the Kardashian-Jenner Empire. Given this family’s legacy, traditional names just won’t cut it.

Each of the Keeping Up With the Kardashians stars’ children has a one-of-a-kind moniker.

Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick’s children

Mason Dash Disick

Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick’s first born son’s name is among the most traditional of all the younger Kardashian-Jenner kids. Mason is a French name that means stone worker, according to Baby Centre.

The eldest Kardashian daughter opened up about her name choice in 2010, explaining its significance to her family while speaking with MTV.

'Right before he was born, I told my aunt we were thinking about going with that for a name,' Kourtney recalled. 'She told me that Mason means the same thing in English that Kardashian means in Armenian – stone worker.

'Another aunt told me my great uncle used to use the name Mason when he made dinner reservations, because Kardashian was too long.'

As for the eight-year-old’s middle name, the origins are unclear. Some Kardashian fans initially believed the name may be linked to Dash boutique, which Kourtney opened with sisters Kim and Khloe in 2006, however she quickly debunked that rumour.

'Dash is not for my clothing store, as some people have suggested online,' she told Life & Style. 'Dash is short for Kardashian, and it was my father’s nickname.'

Penelope Scotland Disick

Penelope is a Greek name, according to Baby Centre. It was the name given to Odysseus’s wife who famously waited nearly two decades for him to return home in The Odyssey.

Kris Jenner told E! News in 2012 that daughter Kourtney Kardashian and her then-beau Scott Disick simply thought the name was cute.

The name, which is said to mean weaver, is ranked No. 24 among the most popular baby names in 2018.

Like big brother Mason Disick, the meaning of five-year-old Penelope’s middle name is unclear. Mom Kourtney Kardashian has no clear ties to Scotland, so it seems more than likely the name was chosen by her ex-boyfriend and baby daddy Scott Disick for unknown reasons.

Reign Aston Disick

Per BabyNameWizard.com, Reign is of Middle English origins with roots in old French. The name means ‘to reign’ or 'kingdom'. It’s also thought to be derived from the Latin regnum, which means 'king'.

Although many fans believed Scott Disick, or Lord Disick as he’s occasionally known, had come up with his third child’s regal name, Kourtney Kardashian told People in 2014 the name was entirely her choosing.

'I actually had the name on our list with Mason,' she said. 'Then with Penelope, I had it on the list but spelled R-A-I-N.'

Aston, her three-year-old’s middle name, was also Kourtney’s idea. The name has Old English roots, according to ThinkBabyNames.com, and means ‘east town’ or ‘ash tree settlement'.

It does not appear this meaning played any role in Kourtney’s decision to pick the name, however.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s children

North West

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are constantly the subject of rumours in the press about their marriage and their children. After the 37-year-old Keeping Up With the Kardashians star announced her first pregnancy, rumours began swirling about what she and her rapper husband would name their child.

It was widely speculated that the couple had settled on North West for their baby girl, but it wasn’t until both Pharrell Williams and Vogue editor Anna Wintour commented on the unique name that Kim and Kanye made up their minds.

‘It was a rumour in the press and we’d never really considered it seriously, at all,’ the Keeping up with the Kardashians star told British GQ during an interview at the Mercer Hotel in New York City.

‘But Kanye and I were having lunch right over there at that table about a year ago and Pharrell came over to us and said "Oh, my God, are you guys really going to call your daughter North? That is the best name." I said "No we’re not, that’s just a rumour".'

Not long after the Happy singer commented on the rumour, Kim recalled being approached by Wintour about it.

‘She told us "North is a genius name." Kanye and I looked at one another and just laughed. I guess at that point it sort of stuck,’ Kim said.

The name is significant to Kim and Kanye in that to them, it means “highest power,” Kris Jenner explained on The View.

‘The way (Kim) explained it to me was that North means highest power and she says that North is their highest point together,’ the proud grandmother explained of her now-four-year-old granddaughter’s name.

Saint West

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s second child Saint reportedly received his holy name because of just how difficult it was to conceive and carry him.

The reality star has been open about her struggles with preeclampsia and placenta accreta, which causes the placenta to attach to the uterus. As such, she didn’t think getting pregnant again was possible.

Insiders told E! News that she and Kanye decided to call their son Saint as a way of stating that he’s ‘a blessing’ which is especially true ‘because she had such a difficult pregnancy'.

Chicago West

The youngest of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s three children was born via surrogate on January 15, 2018. The couple announced their daughter’s arrival and unveiled her name, a nod to the city in which her father was raised, on social media as they have in the past.

The name was met with mixed reactions from fans, though many thought it was sweet when they said she would be known as Chi, pronounced Shy, for short.

Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna’s daughter

Dream Renee Kardashian

Not long after they officially confirmed their relationship, Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna announced that they were expecting their first child together.

The couple, who have since broken up, welcomed Dream Renee Kardashian on November 10, 2016. Sources told People Rob and Chyna, whose real name is Angela Renee White, picked the name together before their daughter’s birth.

'Rob and Chyna had the name Dream for a long time,' the anonymous source said, adding that they’d chosen it because 'they’ve always said she’s a dream come true'.

According to OhBabyNames.Com, Dream is an Old English word likely derived from the Proto-Germanic ‘draugmus,’ which means ‘illusion’ or 'phantasm'.

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott’s baby

Stormi Webster

There are a number of rumours swirling about the meaning behind Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott’s baby girl, Stormi Webster’s, name.

The name is an alternative spelling of the Greenlandic name ‘Storme’ and the English word 'Stormy'. Both are derivatives of the Old English word 'storm', and the Old Norse 'Stormr'.

It’s unclear what, if any, significance the word storm in reference to the weather had for 20-year-old Kylie and her beau, though that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating.

Some joked that the months in which Kylie was away from the public eye due to her desire to keep her pregnancy private were 'the calm before the Stormi'.

Neither Kylie nor Travis, 25, has commented on the name or its meaning.

Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson’s baby

In December 2017 Khloe Kardashian confirmed after months of speculation that she and boyfriend Tristan Thompson were expecting their first child together. While no further details about the child have been revealed, including the gender of the child and his or her due date, fans are dying to know what the 33-year-old intends to name her impending bundle of joy.

During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Khloe revealed that she’s given some consideration to what she’ll name her firstborn, but hasn’t settled on anything just yet.

‘I’ll go with Junior, Tristan Jr. but for a girl, I don’t know where to begin. I think I want a K or a T,’ she shared.
