As the 2020 presidential election nears in November, clothes that encourage you to vote have never been so prevalent. Michelle Obama arguably started this wave of electoral merch during the Democratic National Convention in September. Her viral “VOTE” necklace by Chair Cuthbert’s label, ByChari, had the whole Internet talking. Since then, we’ve seen vote-inspired pieces gain momentum elsewhere. Dr. Jill Biden, the wife of Democratic nominee Joe Biden, recently wore a pair of “Vote” boots by Stuart Weitzman (which model Karlie Kloss also wore). Designers are even now designing special capsule collections sharing this sentiment as well, the through line being to encourage U.S. citizens to get out there and use their voice.
The latest star to get on board with voter-inspired fashion is Kendall Jenner. Yesterday, the model emerged in Malibu, California wearing a face mask that came with a one-word message: Vote. Jenner knows the paparazzi follows her every move, and if she’s going to be photographed for something as mundane as grabbing a smoothie, she might as well use it for good to make a political statement. She also put together her outfit in a clever, simple way to ensure that all eyes would be on her face covering. She finished off the look with a cropped cardi, bike shorts, and sandals—a pretty minimal ensemble that drew the eye upward to the mask.
It’s refreshing to see street style stars such as Jenner beginning to use their fashion as an effective tool for something bigger than just aesthetics. And something tells us we’re going to see much more of this before Election Day rolls around. Let’s hope this is one trend that doesn’t go out of style.
