California gubernatorial candidate Caitlyn Jenner says she wants to put nearly $1 trillion in high-speed rail funds approved by President Biden toward completing former President Donald Trump’s efforts to finish the US-Mexico border wall.
Jenner, a Republican, would be the country’s first transgender governor and has sought to forge a constituency to unseat Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in the lopsidedly liberal state, focusing on reducing crime and easing business regulations.
Jenner told KABC-TV on Thursday, “We’re spending billions on a high-speed train to nowhere, okay? Take some of that money, go down to the border wall and completely finish on state land, completely finish the wall. We need protection.”
Jenner added: “But for those hardworking great people that are here, I want them to be able to get legal status.”
Recent polling indicates that Newsom, who infamously dined maskless at the ritzy French Laundry restaurant while imposing strict COVID-19 rules on ordinary citizens, is likely to survive the recall attempt.
The Biden administration on Thursday restored a $929 million federal grant for California’s high-speed rail project, which would connect Los Angeles and San Francisco sometime in the 2030s. Biden halted construction of Trump’s border wall with Mexico despite a surge in illegal immigration.
The rail project’s price tag has grown steadily and is now expected to cost between $69 billion and $99.8 billion, Reuters reports. The federal government approved $3.5 billion to support the project in 2010 under President Barack Obama, but Trump cut off the final billion after California banked an initial $2.5 billion.
Jenner, 71, is attempting to court centrists in Democrat-dominated California, saying that she didn’t vote for Trump last year and that she is an “inclusive Republican.”
Although Biden carried California by a more than 29 percentage-point landslide over Trump, the state has elected many Republican governors, most recently film star and bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger, who won a 2003 recall election against Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, who was blamed for an energy crisis that included rolling blackouts.
Jenner, who is seeking to follow Schwarzenegger’s path to office, gained fame for winning the US a gold medal in a decathlon, or series of 10 track and field challenges, at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.
Formerly known as Bruce, Jenner was feted at the White House by President Gerald Ford, and was the face of Wheaties cereal. Later, as husband to Kardashian family matriarch Kris Jenner, Jenner was a fixture on the long-running reality TV show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” Jenner came out as transgender in 2015.
