Topline
Production has begun on a Kardashian-Jenner reality show for Hulu, according to Variety, which will be the first project the family undertakes in their new partnership with Disney following the successful run of Keeping up With The Kardashians on E!.
Key Facts
The family’s new show, which Hulu described to Variety as a “new, intimate journey” into their lives, is a part of the content the family will create as a part of their multi-year deal with Disney, which was announced at the end of 2020.
Kris Jenner, Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian West and Khloé Kardashian are signed on as executive producers, and will be joined in the series with Kendall and Kylie Jenner, according to Variety.
Camera crews have reportedly been following the family around since the beginning of this month, per pictures released on The Sun and TMZ, which show Kylie and Kris Jenner grocery shopping followed by cameras and Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian on the beach in front of a cameraman.
Ryan Seacrest, who helped launch Keeping Up With The Kardashians, will also reportedly be an executive producer.
Big Number
Below $100 million. That is reportedly how much E! shelled out to the Kardashian-Jenner clan in 2017 to extend their contract through 2020. Details on the family’s content deal with Disney, including how much it was worth, have not yet been disclosed.
Key Background
The Kardashian-Jenner family shot to fame following the debut of Keeping Up With The Kardashians in 2007, and the show ran for 20 seasons on the Comcast-owned network E!, with the final episode airing on June 10. The network and the family did not say why they parted ways, but sources told Entertainment Tonight that the family was offered more money by Disney. Another potential factor for the move could be the allure of bringing content to streaming services, which have been successful at capturing large audiences amid the Covid-19 pandemic, while primetime ratings for cable shows have shown a decline, with average audience numbers at networks ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox down by 16%. Meanwhile Hulu’s subscriber count has grown from 28 million in 2019 to 43 million in 2021.
Tangent
Forbes valued Kim Kardashian West as a billionaire this year, attributing the rise in her net worth to two of her businesses, KKW Beauty, which she launched in 2017, and Skims, which launched in 2019. Kylie Jenner had a net worth of $620 million as of August, by Forbes’ estimation.
