Travis Scott, Kylie Jenner, Alec Baldwin -- no one shows an ounce of shame anymore - New York Post

Some tragedies, you might think, would cause a person involved to go to ground: Show some respect by disappearing from the scene, or at least taking a break from social media.

But no.

Alec Baldwin, of all people, had a lot of public goodwill after he accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, a young wife and mother.

That is until he very quickly resumed life as usual, replete with terribly tone-deaf Instagram posts.

Now Baldwin’s everywhere: hitting the town Wednesday night in a tux, dining with his fraudulent and equally callous wife at upscale celeb hotspots BondST and Il Cantinori, promoting his podcast on social media, tweeting about politics, posing for happy-family pictures on Instagram while bemoaning how difficult this time has been for them.

For them.

Clearly, Alec and the Hamptons’ own Rachel Dolezal have nary a thought or care as to how any of this must make his victim’s husband and 9-year-old son feel — a son who couldn’t even speak for two days after his mother’s death.

Not even civil lawsuits, the looming threat of criminal charges or a public shaming from George Clooney — who called Baldwin’s shooting “infuriating,” “insane,” and completely avoidable — can mortify Alec, let alone cause a spot of embarrassment.

If only this were an isolated example.

Yet we have Travis Scott, along with his girlfriend Kylie Jenner and the entire Kardashian clan, treating the completely avoidable Astroworld tragedy as an inconvenience — for them.

They couldn’t even stay off social media for a minute. Kendall Jenner, who posted a photo of herself sipping a drink backstage, didn’t take the image down right after the tragedy.

Instead she simply altered it, deleting her caption and adding a mountain peak emoji, a reference to Scott’s Utopia Mountain stage set.

What better way to honor the injured and the dead, right guys?

“Yeah, take a photo in front of the stage where people died,” wrote one follower. “Really classy.”

“Eight people died at the concert,” wrote another. “This pic is tone-deaf.”

To say the least.

The scene at Astroworld was utter human carnage, egged on by Scott. More than 300 people were treated at a field hospital. Twenty-five more were hospitalized. As of this writing ten people have died, including a 9-year-old boy pulled from life support last Sunday.

Here’s the thing — there is perhaps no more media-savvy, sophisticated family on the planet than the Kardashians. Savage as it may be to say, there’s only one takeaway: They don’t care.

These reactions are more suited to the annoyance of getting a parking ticket or a mean tweet. Nothing — not even wholly preventable grievous harm or death, for which you may be responsible — elicits a commensurate response from celebrities anymore. In the immediate aftermath, Travis Scott offered to pay for funerals and therapy, as if that were enough.

That offer is an insult, a slap in the face, a spit in the eye. Most of us, I would like to think, would have trouble getting out of bed for weeks.

Yet on Thursday, Kylie, who is expecting their second child, posted her fashion collaboration with Kendall.

We are through a Warholian looking glass: Truly, there is no such thing as bad publicity.

This is sociopathic.

Two years ago, I wrote about our new and alarming post-shame era in which no accusation or action — from pedophilia to rape to racism, plagiarism to anti-Semitism to urging someone to kill themselves online, wife-beating or sex trafficking or incest or murder — is any more beyond the pale.

Once upon a time, Travis Scott would have been considered radioactive. Now his streams and record sales are way up. Nike issued a statement that they won’t be cutting ties with Scott; The Wall Street Journal noted that Nike’s shares remained up.

On the eve of jury selection, Ghislaine Maxwell, perhaps the most reviled woman in the world, gave a jailhouse interview to the Daily Mail, claiming she’s the real victim here.

“I am weak, frail, tired and don’t even have shoes that fit,” she said. “I have not had a nutritious meal . . . I have not slept without lights on . . . I have not been allowed to exercise.”

A woman accused of sex trafficking and sexually abusing teenage girls has the temerity to ask for our sympathies here.

Really, for all the hysteria over cancel culture, rarely will it cost you your job (Brian Williams) or the profitability of your estate (Michael Jackson) or a swift comeback (Chrissy Teigen) or your future as a Hollywood power player (Mel Gibson).

Bill Cosby’s out of jail. Want to bet that Travis Scott will headline another festival (he hasn’t dropped out of Coachella 2022, despite a petition with more than 25,000 signatures) or that Alec Baldwin will remain a Hollywood fixture, or that Maxwell, even if convicted, will ever express an iota of remorse or accountability?

And for those few eventually held to account— Harvey Weinstein, R. Kelly, Andrew Cuomo — well, they’re still not remorseful. Nope — instead, they assume the ultimate in hypocritical chic for celebrities circa now: The mantle of victimhood.
