Halloween during COVID: What a drive-thru spooky experience is like
USA TODAY's Carly Mallenbaum takes us inside several pandemic-friendly Halloween drive-thrus in Los Angeles, California.
Kendall Jenner is the latest in the Kardashian-Jenner clan to come under fire for their behavior during the coronavirus pandemic.
On Halloween, the model, 24, threw a celebrity-filled costume party in Los Angeles to celebrate her upcoming birthday on Nov. 3 – and people are criticizing the event, where most attendees appeared without a face mask, amid COVID-19.
"not all these celebs posting about wearing a mask, social distancing then showing up to kendall jenners party. eat the rich," user @katiiestyles wrote.
Daily infections are at an all-time high in the United States heading into Tuesday's election, according to Johns Hopkins University data. As of Monday, the university data shows that California is surging, with Los Angeles topping both their lists of counties with the highest number of cases and deaths.
There were reportedly signs that asked people not to post photos to social media, but even Jenner's sister Kylie shared multiple star-studded Instagram stories that night.
"kendall jenner really threw a big (expletive) party with all those celebrities without masks in the middle of a pandemic with a 'no social media' rule so people wouldn’t find out about it...." user @jeonlvr tweeted, sharing circulated photos of the event.
In images circulating around social media, many of which originated from Kylie Jenner's account, show celebrities who attended include Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, Scott Disick, The Weeknd, Winnie Harlow, Saweetie, Jaden Smith and more.
USA TODAY has reached out to Kendall Jenner's reps for comment.
Here are more notable reactions:
"I felt risqué going to an outdoor wine pop-up with 2 tested friends last night THEN I SAW KYLIE JENNERS IG STORY!!!" screenwriter Camilla Blackett tweeted.
"Ok Kendall Jenner blowing out candles as a masked waiter holds her cake and tries to move out of the way was actually the scariest thing I saw on Halloween," user @lolzlindz shared with a video clip from Kylie's IG Story.
Smith, who was photographed wearing an oxygen mask also raised eyebrows, with some thinking he was insensitively dressed as a COVID-19 patient.
"not jaden smith dressing up as a covid patient for halloween. apart from attending that kendall jenner party, he's making fun of the situation," user @arianasmarvel tweeted. "my mom and my aunt are ashmatic (sic), and they were rushed to the hospital with oxygen many times. i'm beyond disgusted."
Kendall Jenner isn't the only one in her family to be called out recently.
On Tuesday, Kim Kardashian West attempted to get ahead of backlash over photos from her 40th birthday party by acknowledging her privilege, but that didn't stop negative feedback from fans who felt that sharing photos from a private island trip with friends during a pandemic was in bad taste.
"After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time," she captioned social media posts of the celebration, adding that she realized "that for most people, this is something that is so far out of reach right now, so in moments like these, I am humbly reminded of how privileged my life is."
