During Disney's investor day presentation in December, a brief 46-word press release signaled to the world that the Kardashian-Jenner family would segue from their Keeping Up With the Kardashians home at E! to Disney, where they would create content for streamer Hulu.
Very little has surfaced in the months since about what to expect from the multiyear pact or even what the format will be. More reality? Fashion and beauty-focused? Travel? Competition? Self-help? Who knows! Kim Kardashian teased the deal last week in a brief tweet, saying that "our new show on Hulu will be coming after the final season." The KUWTK finale is set to air this summer and reports have stated that a new Hulu project could come later this year.
Even with that right around the corner, momager-turned-mogul Kris Jenner still isn't ready to talk specifics. However, during a virtual interview with WSJ. Magazine's editor-in-chief Kristina O'Neill on Monday, she did open up a bit about how it feels to be in the Disney fold. "It's a really exciting opportunity for us to be able to do something fresh and new and fun, and they have been nothing but amazing to work with so far," she said. "We haven't really nailed down the exact format yet, but we're working on it."
The 40-minute conversation — part of the WSJ. Magazine franchise "The One," a print and video series, this one sponsored by luxury online retailer Mytheresa — covered a lot of ground on a wide range of topics including Kim Kardashian's demanding schedule, Caitlyn Jenner's transition, Kris Jenner's forthcoming skincare line and the best way to win during business negotiations.
Tuning in (and treated to VIP viewing boxes filled with some of Kris Jenner's favorite things like Belvedere Vodka and Mytheresa gift cards) were Kendall Jenner, Khloe Kardashian, Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian and Kylie Jenner as well as Riccardo Tisci, Martha Stewart, Tommy Hilfiger, Chris Appleton, Ashley Graham, Derek Blasberg, Erin Foster, Jen Atkin, Jennifer Fisher, Kyle Richards, La La Anthony, Lorraine Schwartz, Melanie Griffith, Rachel Zoe, Simon Huck, Tish Cyrus and others.
O'Neill walked Kris Jenner back to the launch of KUWTK, asking about early scenes including one that found Kim Kardashian contemplating firing her mother. Asked whether anyone has tried to part ways with the momager since, Kris Jenner quipped, "Kourtney. Probably three or four times that's just a day."
On a more serious note, Kris Jenner opened up on the lessons she learned about Caitlyn Jenner's public transition, something that was well-documented on KUWTK. "It was a shock and then it was a reality and then it was something that we had to absorb and try to wrap our heads around and learn about," she explained. "Going through it was just one day at a time, truly. I had no experience in anything like that, so you're just trying to understand. I'm the kids' mom and trying to navigate; that was honestly hard because I wanted to be the best parent I could be, and I didn't always know what that meant."
Kris Jenner qualified their relationship today as "very respectful," adding that Caitlyn is "the father of my two kids. That speaks volumes."
The conversation came on the heels of WSJ. Magazine's cover story on Kris Jenner. Included in that story was a quote from Ryan Seacrest that, to O'Neill, spoke volumes. He described Kris Jenner as one of the best dealmakers he's ever seen. O'Neill asked her to share some secret negotiation tactics or to offer up advice for women on how to succeed in the boardroom. "I kind of live by the motto if someone says no, you're talking to the wrong person," she said. "There's always a way for both sides to feel like they win. … If you can get there, realistically and logically, and it's financially sound for everybody involved, that's a win."
That said, Kris Jenner noted that as a family, not everything has gone their way. "We've thrown a lot of spaghetti at the wall and kissed a lot of frogs over the years." Because of that, she adopted the philosophy to run for the hills if something looks off. "Don't just do something because it's an opportunity. Only do it because you think it's a great fit."
Keeping up with her daughters and managing their respective businesses is never not a challenge, but Kris Jenner said that she's "never met anyone busier than Kim." She gets a fresh copy every night and the following morning of Kim's schedule, and she always marvels at how she prioritizes everything throughout her day. She gave a special mention about how Kim focuses when it comes time to study for law school. She blocks out chunks of her day and allows for no calls, no interruptions.
O'Neill then asked if Kris Jenner had ever been asked to take on any personal clients that did not have the name Kardashian or Jenner. "I have — many times," she confirmed. "But it's just a question of bandwidth. I could have a company that has other agents and managing partners and this and that, but I have figured out the comfort level of where I am with who I have to work with. It just works for us. I would be doing a disservice to my family."
She's also gearing up to be her own client with the launch of a forthcoming skincare line, which she said is delayed now as she focuses on steering her daughters' businesses. "I will press go when I have enough time to give it my heart and soul," she explained, adding that she fit in a partnership with Chrissy Teigen on the launch of Safely, a plant-based cleaning products line. "I don't think it'll ever not be a great skincare line. There's plenty of time for that."
Toward the end of the interview, O'Neill asked Jenner to put her eyes on the future and predict where she sees the family empire in 10 years. "We'll be on Hulu and hopefully thriving, doing what we love to do and being exactly where we're supposed to be."
No matter where that is, one place you won't find Kris Jenner is a retirement home. "That retirement ship sailed a long time ago," said the 65-year-old. "What they say is true: The longer you work the healthier you will be and the longer you will live. I'm banking on that."
