Weeks after rising from the ashes of her phoenix disguise on The Masked Singer, Caitlyn Jenner has reportedly set her sights on a bid for the governor’s seat in California. According to Axios, the 71-year-old is “actively” meeting with GOP advisers in an effort to defeat incumbent Governor Gavin Newsom during an upcoming recall election.
Jenner, who became a gold medal-winning athlete in the 1976 Olympics and came out as a transgender woman in 2015, introducing herself via Vanity Fair’s July 2015 cover, would run as a Republican. She’s joining a pantheon of celebrities with political ambitions in recent years, including Cynthia Nixon, Matthew McConaughey, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and (potentially) Meghan Markle. But unlike the theoretical candidacies of Markle or McConaughey, Jenner has already enlisted GOP operative Caroline Wren, with whom she worked on the LGBTQ+ nonprofit American Unity Fund.
Per Axios, both Wren and Jenner have ties to Donald Trump. The former had a role at Trump Victory, a joint fundraising committee for Trump’s reelection efforts. Wren then assisted in planning the rally that preceded the U.S. Capitol insurrection. As for Jenner, she previously supported Trump in the 2016 election, before criticizing his treatment of the transgender community the following year. Her run for governor of California comes amidst backlash for Newsom and his perceived missteps in California’s response to COVID-19. There’s an April 29 deadline to review signatures in the petition for Newsom’s recall election, which also comes in response to his immigration and tax policies.
The last successful recall election in the state happened in 2003, when another celebrity, Arnold Schwarzenegger, ousted Gray Davis. GOP campaigner Rob Stutzman, a longtime adviser to Schwarzenegger, told the Los Angeles Times that he isn’t optimistic about Jenner’s odds. “Arnold was the most famous person in the world aside from the pope. She’s famous but not that famous,” he explained. “And Arnold already had some credibility in the public-policy space—he had sponsored a statewide ballot measure, had campaigned for candidates, been involved with the presidential physical fitness council.”
Jenner has publicly aired her political aspirations before, telling CNN’s Don Lemon in 2017 that she would “seriously look at” running for office in the future. Still, an industry insider asserted to Deadline that “Caitlyn Jenner is never going to be governor of California,” although “she may get herself a new show on a streamer out of all this.” Like Trump, Jenner does have roots in the reality-TV space, appearing on Keeping Up With the Kardashians before starring in her own E! spin-off, I Am Cait, for two seasons. These days, she’s creating content on her own YouTube channel, where she offers up cooking tutorials, motivational talks, and the occasional Kylie cameo.
The world may have to await confirmation of Jenner’s bid for governor until her appearance on the final season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, which is airing now.
