Caitlyn Jenner flashes her gold medal and includes a clip of her win in the 1976 Olympics decathlon — when she competed as Bruce Jenner — in a new ad for her run in California’s upcoming gubernatorial recall election.
The gold medal is on screen for three seconds of the ad, as Jenner’s voiceover says, “We need to compete against the other states like Texas and Florida that are taking our citizens and our businesses away.”
“We need to compete with them,” she repeats when the camera returns to her face. “I’m very good at competing, I guarantee you that,” she adds, as a one-second clip of her competing as Bruce in a USA uniform appears, with an announcer calling the then-world record Jenner set in the grueling event.
“And I like winning,” Jenner states as the camera again returns to her face.
Jenner came out in April 2015 as a trans woman.
The rest of the ad is more conventional political commentary, painting a dark picture of a state beset by onerous taxes, regulations and a declining population.
“Right now in California, we’re No. 1 in regulations, we’re No. 1 in taxes, and we’re No. 1 in people exiting this state. It doesn’t have to be that way,” Jenner says into the camera, amid a grim montage of California’s current decrepitude.
“We need to go to Sacramento with a different approach. We need less regulations, we need less taxes, we need to compete against other the other states like Texas and Florida that are taking our citizens and our businesses away. We need to compete with them,” Jenner continued. “I’m very good at competing, I guarantee you that. And I like winning. But we need to compete with these states.”
California’s current governor Gavin Newsom has seen his popularity in the state sink amid ongoing lockdowns — and his own peculiar habit of enforcing the rules for others but not himself.
Angry residents are hoping to oust him in a recall and have gathered enough signatures to force a vote on the issue that will likely happen in November 2021.
