Caitlyn Jenner Says Homeless People Decrease Californians' 'Quality of Life' - Newsweek

California gubernatorial candidate Caitlyn Jenner tweeted a comment about the population of homeless Californians on Wednesday, referring to their presence as a "mess" and saying they decrease Californians' "quality of life."

Jenner tweeted a link to a New York Post story about Los Angeles sanitation workers removing homeless citizens' shelters and cleaning debris at Venice Beach. Jenner shared the story with the comment: "As Governor I will work with local leaders to continue cleaning up the mess, years of democratic rule have left us with. We have to clean up our streets and increase quality of life for all Californians."

The former Olympian and reality TV star's tweet comes on the heels of a controversial interview with Inside California Politics on TV channel KRON4, during which she suggested homeless people might be moved away from the city to "an open field out in someplace."

In the same interview, Jenner also said that homeless people are "destroying Venice Beach. They're destroying all the businesses down there."

"They don't need to be there. The crime rate is going up...It's mostly homeless-on-homeless murders. We can't have that in our streets," she said.

Jenner's recent comments have caused a backlash.

Twitter user @stribs replied to Jenner's tweet saying, "By 'clean up our streets' I assume you mean forcibly removing already greatly disadvantaged human beings and placing them somewhere else where rich people don't have to look at them. Any meaningful, long term solutions to address the real roots of homelessness?"

Another user, @Keen1971, replied, "They are people. Not dirt. Not mess. People. Try climbing out of your ivory tower and actually helping those in need. That is what great leaders do."

While some reactions to Jenner's decried her lack of empathy for the homeless, others seemed frustrated with a lack of clearly defined knowledge or policy.

"Enough with the empty platitudes. Either give a policy example your administration would implement to fix the issues, or just be quiet," tweeted @BreonnaSimonSays.

And @canyonwlkr tweeted, "Curious . . . what experience do you have in dealing with the homeless? Every volunteer, gone to a public meeting, or even donated? As long as they stay away from your airplane hangar, it's all good."

The Venice Beach local government is in the process of offering alternative services to the approximately 200 homeless people who have been living at the encampment on the beach.

"We will offer what works: housing, with counseling, or mental health services, substance abuse recovery services and anything else needed to successfully transition people into housing," Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin told KTLA.

Jenner announced her campaign to run in April as a Republican candidate against Incumbent Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in his upcoming recall election.

Newsweek reached out to Jenner's campaign for comment but did not hear back in time for publication.
