LAS CRUCES - The Ramos family decided to cook breakfast for the less fortunate in Las Cruces after seeing the suffering caused during the pandemic.

Jesse Ramos along with his daughter Maya, his mother Senaida Quesada and business partner Israel Baca set up a kitchen outside Mesilla Valley Community of Hope on Sunday morning intending to feed as many as were hungry, no charge.

Ramos and Baca served pancakes and bacon to those in and around Community of Hope, which offers services to homeless and indigent populations.

“We’re just trying to help out the less fortunate during this COVID-19, just trying to get out there and help everybody out,” Ramos said. “Everything is coming out of our pocket … we’re just doing it because.”

Ramos' sister, Kimberly Ramos, said the family just wanted to give back.

"We're not part of a church or workplace, just a family giving back to the community," Kimberly Ramos said.

A line of hungry men and women waited six feet apart for their special Mother’s Day meal.

“I think this is the place that needs a bit of extra help,” Ramos said. “We love to cook, that’s our job. We used to work at Hooters, Village Inn and IHOP … so we need something to do." Most restaurants have reduced staffing during the pandemic.

Ramos said he feels great that he is able to help during the pandemic when so many choose not to.

“It’s amazing, I mean there’s not a lot of people that want to step up and do this kind of thing, especially right now, so I thought that it would be best that we did it because we have a passion for it,” Ramos said.

Ramos plans to keep doing more events to feed those in need throughout the pandemic.

“Mostly everyone has been thanking us, they’re grateful, extremely grateful,” Ramos said. “Not everyone is going to give away bacon.”
