Fashion designer Michael Costello is never afraid to call out misdeeds.
The former “Project Runway” star, 37, has turned his ire on Kylie Jenner after the young makeup mogul posted a photo on Instagram wearing a bedazzled Balmain look and thanking designer Olivier Rousteing for “the most perfect bday dress.”
“Thank you Oliver for the perfect bday dress. And thank you to the no name designers who work tirelessly around the clock on custom looks who she won’t tag , mention or @ . . . Unless it’s paid,” Costello commented, adding that he was not speaking up for his own work “as Kylie only wears something from me once a year and I’m lucky if i get a decent pic to post.”
The designer continued, “But it’s sad that designers work so so so so hard on these opportunities to dress these gorgeous popular women and they only tag the major high end designers like Oliver but forget about the other ones … why not tag at least one? Not all the time but maybe once in a while.”
This isn’t the first time Kylie, 23, has come under fire for not tagging designers. Last month, fans accused her of “refusing” to give credit to black-owned label Loundbrand Studios in a post — which she publicly denied.
It’s worth noting that Jenner and Rousteing have a particularly close relationship; the French designer has been a family friend of the Kardashians for nearly a decade, and the two recently collaborated on a Kylie Cosmetics x Balmain collection that included makeup as well as high-fashion accessories.
Responding to Page Six Style’s request for comment, Costello doubled down. “I’m tired of privileged celebrities and influencers with millions of followers who will only mention, tag, or credit a few designers who pay them. It is not right that they also demand thousands of other designers, who are just equally if not more talented, to drop everything at a call to make them pieces that end up being rack fillers,” he said.
Costello continued, “I have a fantastic relationship with a few stylists and celebrities who not only appreciate my time but credit my work and pays my staff. Unfortunately, there is also a lot of influencers and celebrities who take advantage of their privilege by trying to get my team to drop all projects, work for free and end up not wearing/not crediting the work.”
“I am a firm believer that credit should be given where credit is due,” he concluded. “They need to start acknowledging every single person who has worked tirelessly around-the-clock that helped to get them to where they are.”
Jenner’s rep declined to comment.
