The longtime leader of Polk County's public hospital is retiring.

Broadlawns Medical Center announced Tuesday that CEO Jody Jenner will retire after 15 years, effective April 15.

Jenner, 61, took over the north side Des Moines hospital when it was reeling financially. The organization has rebounded in recent years, allowing for expansion and refurbishment of its main campus, which had been in poor condition. Broadlawns also has added services and satellite clinics in recent years.

“We are immeasurably grateful for Jody’s dedication and leadership of Broadlawns Medical Center,” Janet Metcalf, chair of the hospital's board of trustees, said in a news release about his retirement. “Jody is an extraordinary leader, and he has left an indelible legacy for our community with what he has achieved at Broadlawns. His commitment to working for the greater good of our community is unparalleled.”

Broadlawns has 200 beds, more than 1,100 employees and 100 physicians, and an annual budget topping $180 million. Its revenues include payments from public and private health insurance programs, plus more than $60 million in property taxes.

Its financial improvement is partly due to Iowa's decision to expand its Medicaid program under the federal Affordable Care Act. That decision means many Iowa adults who used to be uninsured now are covered by Medicaid, so Broadlawns receives payment for treating them.

Jenner said in the release that it was "a tremendous honor" to lead Broadlawns.

“We have an outstanding staff, and there is talent and expertise throughout every facet of our organization," he said. "Polk County should take great pride in knowing that we have one of the best public hospitals in America.”

Jenner's decision to retire comes amid a major shift on the hospital's seven-seat board.

Board Chair Bill Taber was ousted by county voters on Nov. 3, coming in fourth place in a five-candidate race for two open seats. Taber then dropped a plan to seek reappointment to another seat, which was vacated by veteran board member Mary Fuller shortly after the election. The board is to pick a replacement for Fuller on Jan. 19.

Last month, Broadlawns board members were sued by local attorney Gary Dickey Jr., who alleges the board illegally decided behind closed doors to raise Jenner's pay.

The board decided to give their CEO an $88,889 bonus for Fiscal Year 2020, grant him a 4.3% raise and extend his employment contract by three years, the lawsuit says. It also made him eligible for another $100,000 bonus for the next fiscal year, the suit says. Jenner's 2020 salary before the bonus was $544,177.
