Caitlyn Jenner is addressing all the criticism she's known to receive from the trans community. The Keeping Up With The Kardashians alum recently explained why she's 'too controversial' for some of her trans peers.
The former Olympian got the world's attention when she came out publicly as a trans woman in April 2015. She announced her new name in July of that year and had her name and gender legally changed in September 2016. She unveiled her new look in a Vanity Fair spread that featured the hashtag #CallMeCaitlyn. “I'm so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self," she tweeted at the time. But her proud conservative views have often left her on the receiving end of backlash from her peers. Critics often call out her life as a high profile celebrity and former pro athlete in an attempt to denounce her alignment with the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community.
The former reality recently addressed the public scrutiny she receives from the trans community in an interview with Dear Media's The Skinny Confidential Him & Her podcast. "I gotta be very careful with that. The trans community is probably more critical than the general public," Caitlyn said when asked about the double-standard she receives from people. She went on to blame her past "privilege" as a white man for being the reason she can't "be a spokesperson for the community." The I Am Cait star continued. "I've had every privilege there is in the world. I agree with them." She shared how she initially "thought I could really make a difference and change the world." But despite not being hailed in the community, she knows that "in a lot of ways I did just being myself, but I mean, I try to do things politically."
After admitting to being "more on the Republican side than anything," the former KUWTK star recalled a past LGBTQ charity event she donated to but was asked not to attend. "Near the end, I would help some of the organizations here in the Los Angeles area and they would have an event that I helped pay for and they would ask me not to come cause I'm too controversial," she revealed. She shared a bit of her frustration over the public response. "I've had members of the community just tear into me and that's like, 'Guys, I'm only trying to help them. I'm here to help." Through her media appearances and periodic reality TV gigs, Caitlyn is able to spread awareness in her own way.
"I feel like my greatest contribution that I can make is just being out there without trying to change the world," she added. Her family has all been very supportive of her journey. We're sure her stable family life helps her in going out and living in her truth.
