Lilian Afshar’s accessories are unmistakable. The designer’s handmade lucite clutches take the mini-bag trend to new heights with their bright colors and unusual shapes. Beloved by the likes of Kylie Jenner, Beyoncé, and Queen Rania, they’ve become a constant on the red carpet since the brand launched in 2013. Like many small business owners, Afshar has found herself in a reflective mood amid the COVID-19 crisis. “During isolation from the world, I’ve to find somewhere to look, so I’ve looked inward,” she shared via email from Dubai. “It’s always time to give back, and now more than ever, we have to think of ways beyond our norms to move forward collectively.” This thought process led to a bright idea: a limited-edition purse with all proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders.
The new purple-tinged minaudiere was inspired by the seventh and highest chakra and is named Sierra, after the Sanskrit for wheel that’s used in yoga and meditative practices to denote the energy centers of the body. “It represents spirituality, strength, passion, and meditation,” says Afshar. “Qualities that will help us get through this together.”
With their mission of bringing frontline workers to the areas that need them most, Doctors Without Borders is an organization that resonated with Afshar, who has developed a new appreciation for the interdependence of the global community. “This [experience] has taught me that everything is connected, and the only way to get through this is together,” she says. The momentary pause has allowed Afshar to channel her energy into the new designs. “The world moved at such a fast pace [so] I am using this time to experiment with my materials,” she says. “Creativity, for me, is taking risks and most importantly, a way of connecting with people.”
