When you’re as famous as Kylie Jenner is, criticism is inevitable. Everything the 22-year-old posts on Twitter and Instagram is scrutinized or critiqued by millions of people. Even when Jenner is trying to do the right thing, sometimes she comes across to people as slightly tone-deaf. Jenner’s latest tweet is no exception to the rule.
Like many celebrities, Jenner has made the decision to practice social distancing by self-quarantining amidst the Coronavirus (COVI-19) outbreak. Coronavirus has quickly become a pandemic and has already caused thousands of deaths. At this time, many U.S. cities have shut down schools, restaurants, bars, movie theaters, etc. This is an attempt to “flatten the curve” by trying to reduce the number of people who contract the virus. By doing so, we will be giving our healthcare system a fighting chance to deal with the virus without being overwhelmed.
Kylie Jenner speaks out about Coronavirus on Twitter
Amidst the chaos, Jenner has been relatively quiet on social media. She has been staying in her mansion, doing puzzles, and spending time with her two-year-old daughter, Stormi. But, Jenner did share a message to her fans on St. Patrick’s Day 2020 via her Twitter and Instagram pages. “I hope everyone is feeling well! it’s so important right now to self-quarantine to ensure we aren’t endangering ourselves or anyone who can’t handle this virus,” the billionaire wrote.
Some fans on Twitter immediately began to praise Jenner for her message. They believed she was setting a proper example for the millions of people who idolize her. “If Kylie could be locked up for 9 months to hide her pregnancy, you can also be quarantined to protect your health, cheer up friend,” one person tweeted out. Jenner also received countless well-wishes for herself and her family.
Fans troll Jenner about her net worth
Other people, however, felt that Jenner was failing to acknowledge her privilege with the Twitter message. They pointed out that she, a billionaire, could afford to self-quarantine with little to no consequences. However, many people don’t have that option because they have to support themselves and their families economically. Furthermore, though lots of places are shutting down, there are still plenty of jobs that remain open and employers expect their employees to show up.
“You wanna pay our rent so my dad who’s 60 years old doesn’t have to drive Uber in NYC? He’s diabetic and has high blood pressure and he’s out here trying to make a living for his family not everyone has a choice to stay home. Some of us will be kicked out of our homes,” one person responded to Jenner on Twitter. “Pay our rents so we don’t have to go to work,” another person chimed in to the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star.
Many of Jenner’s fans can’t afford to stay inside the house
“I would self-quarantine for months if I had a billion dollars,” one person wrote, citing Jenner’s net worth. “Thanks for your ‘thoughtful wishes’ now put that billion towards people that lost their jobs and can’t afford rent,” another Twitter user added in response to the tweet. “My cash app is **** if you wanna help me self quarantine. Otherwise, I’m going to work,” yet another person chimed in.
Does the makeup guru need to recognize her privilege?
To give Jenner the benefit of the doubt, her heart seemed to be in the right place with this particular tweet. However, a simple acknowledgment of privilege and/or caveat of self-quarantining only if you are able to, might have made this message go over a bit better with Jenner’s Twitter following. Nevertheless, we hope the people who can afford to socially isolate do just that so we can get on the other side of Coronavirus sooner rather than later.
