She was a supporter during the 2016 White House race, but Caitlyn Jenner is now calling President TrumpDonald John TrumpCEO of American investment firm believed Michael Cohen could bring in GOP donors for deals: report NAACP slams NFL for gag rule on national anthem Pelosi: Republican meeting over informant will 'nix' possibility of bipartisan briefing MORE the “worst” commander in chief ever for the LGBT community.
“I want him to know politically I am disappointed, obviously,” the Olympian-turned-reality TV regular said in an interview with Broadly published this week. “I don’t want our community to go backwards.”
“Just leave us alone, that’s all we want,” said Jenner, one of the world’s most famous openly transgender women. “Then maybe later down the line, we can get somebody a little better,” the 68-year-old former “I am Cait” star added.
Trump, Jenner said, “has been, for all LGBT issues, the worst president we have ever had.”
During the 2016 campaign, Jenner, a Republican, had expressed support for Trump’s White House bid, once saying the real estate mogul would "be very good for women's issues."
She has since turned critical, blasting the president last year over his decision to roll back Obama-era protections for transgender students and a plan to ban transgender people from military service.
In addition, Trump’s Department of Justice has said that civil rights laws don’t prevent firings on the basis of sexual orientation — contradicting the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission — and filed an amicus brief supporting the Christian baker whose opposition to making cakes for gay weddings is currently before the Supreme Court.
“I think it’s good that I’m on the Republican side because the Republicans know that, and I have an immediate in with them to change their minds,” Jenner said, citing an in-person conversation she had with Vice President Pence at last year’s inauguration.
“The Republicans need the most work when it comes to our issues, I get that. I would rather work from the inside. I’m not the type of person who is going to stand on a street corner with a sign and jump up and down. No, I’m going to go have dinner with these people.”
Despite knocking Trump, Jenner told Broadly she wouldn’t commit to casting a ballot for a Democrat in the future.
"I don’t know who in the Democratic Party. I would look at it,” Jenner said. “I don’t vote parties. I vote the person."
