Controlling The Narrative: Caitlyn Jenner and Alan Nierob Speak At UO

Caitlyn Jenner is coming to the University of Oregon with her publicist to talk about how she controlled the media narrative during and after her gender transition.

For decades people knew Caitlin Jenner as Bruce Jenner, the Olympic gold medalist in decathlon.
PhD student Bethany Grace Howe helped to bring Jenner and her publicist Alan Nierob to the UO. Howe says she’s inspired by how Jenner was able to tell her own story as someone who’s constantly in the public eye.
“And that was the world she knew. And so she went and navigated the world to the best of her ability, using the tools at her disposal.”
Howe says as a transgender woman herself, she also felt the need to control her narrative during her transition.
Howe: “And I’m not speaking for Caitlyn here but, no I did this because it’s the only way I knew how to do it. This is my story. This is my narrative. I get to tell it. And I will use every tool at my disposal to preserve that right.”
The event with Caitlin Jenner is already sold out but there will be a live stream of the talk Tuesday evening at Straub Hall on the UO campus.
