Jenner & Block names new chair, first outside Chicago home office - Crain's Chicago Business

Jenner & Block anointed a Washington, D.C.-based litigator as its new chair, the first outside Chicago, its home for more than a century.

Thomas Perrelli, who co-chairs the law firm's government controversies and public policy litigation practice, succeeds Craig Martin, who continues as a partner and a member of the firm's policy committee. The role allows occupants to continue their practices.

Perrelli, 53, has been in and out of government, serving as the associate attorney general, the No. 3 position in the Justice Department, under President Barack Obama, and lower-level Department of Justice jobs under President Bill Clinton.

The Virginia native started at Jenner in 1992, a year after graduating from Harvard Law School. He served as managing editor of the Harvard Law Review when Obama, a classmate, was its president.

Perrelli led the government’s efforts to negotiate a $25 billion settlement to resolve claims against financial institutions for servicing of mortgages, according to a statement from Jenner & Block. The D.C. attorney also negotiated the creation of a $20 billion fund to compensate victims of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The firm said Perrelli is the fifth partner to hold the position of chair and the youngest.

Katya Jestin, based in New York, and Randy Mehrberg, based in Chicago, remain Jenner's co-managing partners.
