Jenner & Block nabs former Mueller prosecutor - Crain's Chicago Business

Chicago law firm Jenner & Block has recruited a top former federal prosecutor, Andrew Weissmann, who played a key role in the indictment of Trump campaign officials involved in his 2016 election.

Weissmann, 62, will rejoin the law firm in July at its New York office, becoming co-chair of Jenner’s investigations, compliance and defense practice, the firm said in a statement. He was formerly part of that office from 2006 to 2011, but most of his career has been spent working for the federal government.

He was chief of the fraud section in the Justice Department’s criminal division and also formerly served as the general counsel for the FBI, but his most high-profile role was in working with Special Counsel Robert Mueller in investigating Russia’s involvement in the election of President Donald Trump. Specifically, Weissmann spearheaded building the case against former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort.

Weissmann left the special counsel’s office around March of last year, and took a role teaching at New York University law school. He also began writing a book about his experience working on the special counsel’s team and entered a book deal with Random House. A date hasn’t been set for publication of the book, according to Patricia Lojo, a Jenner spokeswoman.

“Andrew did groundbreaking work in the field of corporate compliance, both here and while leading the Fraud Section,” Jenner co-managing partner Randy Mehrberg said in the statement. “His experience will help our clients mitigate the risks associated with government investigations. Andrew is also a top-flight trial lawyer, who notched many civil litigation victories during his prior tenure at Jenner & Block."

In this role heading the fraud section from 2013 to 2017, he managed 125 white-collar prosecutors pursuing Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations; securities and financial fraud; and health care fraud. From 2002 to 2005, Weissmann was deputy and later director of the Enron Task Force in Washington, supervising the prosecution of people involved in the collapse of that Houston energy company. Earlier, as chief of the criminal division in the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Eastern District of New York, he oversaw prosecutions of mob family members associated with the Colombo, Gambino and Genovese families.
