The New York Times reported Sunday that the Trump administration is weighing a motion that would require individuals to identify as male or female based on their genitalia at birth. The move would effectively exclude transgender and non-binary people from the government’s legal definition of gender — and rollback protections for more than a million Americans.
Jenner is a Republican who voted for Trump, but she has repeatedly spoken out against his policies on transgender Americans.
“There are 15,000 patriotic transgender Americans in the US military fighting for all of us,” she tweeted after Trump announced his ban on transgender service members. “What happened to your promise to fight for them?”
Jenner has also described the president's record on transgender issues as “extraordinarily disappointing,” and said that he has set the community back “20 years.”
Though Jenner has been open about her opposition to Trump’s policies on transgender rights, a number of other Trump critics criticized Jenner for her tweet, given her past support of the president.
“YOU IGNORED THE PLEAS OF TRANS PEOPLE,” tweeted comedian Kathy Griffin, while other social media users called out Jenner for “helping” Trump by voting for him.
