The reviews are in: Plenty of celebrities are decidedly not fans of the plan by the Trump administration, reported over the weekend by the New York Times, to require people’s gender to be defined by their biology at birth.
Among the critics who saw it as a move that would harm the transgender community were a handful of A-list advocates. “A Star Is Born” actress Lady Gaga registered her thoughts on Twitter: “The government may be living in an alternate universe, but we as a society & culture know who we are and know our truth and must stick together and raise our voices so we can educate them about gender identities,” she wrote, adding the hashtags #TransRightsAreHumanRights and #WontBeErased.
Caitlyn Jenner, the former Olympian and reality TV star, also criticized the proposed change. Jenner, a Republican who had once supported President Trump, told People magazine that “the Trump administration has ferociously attacked my community again,” and tweeted a graphic bearing the words “Trans People Won’t Be Erased,” an image that singer Ariana Grande shared on her Instagram stories.
Others weighed in, too: Singer Cher retweeted a message from her son, Chaz Bono, who is transgender.
